Fine Artist, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
José Luis de Rivera (b. 1980, Mexico City), is an instinctive, spiritual, full-time artist, who quit an IT Project Manager position in 2018, after 14 years, to start his professional studies in the Fine Arts. He began attending drawing and painting workshops under the instruction of Mexican artists Alejandro Barron and Ivette Tejero, focusing on the methods and practices of traditional realism.
José Luis’s painting style is aesthetically influenced by some old masters such as Caravaggio, William Bouguereau and J.C. Leyendecker, pursing a variety of subjects from portrait to erotically dramatic figurative work. His palette is bold and lively, inspired in Diego Rivera colors, while the drawings are examples of his draftsmanship, and provide a glimpse into the complex structure of his seemingly effortless painting style.
He is intent on creating beautiful works which capture forms, textures and colors we find all around us, and referring to the close and intimate connections we develop with people, objects and spaces by creating sophisticated pieces of figure, portrait, still life, mural, and landscape.
His work invites the viewer to share his inner world as he explores his identity through the roles of artist and lover of Mexican folk art, culture and traditions.
